🚀 Major New Features

1. In-App Messaging System

Status: ✓ Fully Implemented & Tested

Overview:

Complete direct messaging system enabling employers to communicate with candidates without leaving the platform. Protects candidates from spam by restricting conversation initiation to employers only.

Technical Implementation:

  • Database Entities: Conversation & Message entities with proper relationships
  • Backend Functions: startConversation (creates new threads), sendMessageNotification (email alerts)
  • Frontend Components: MessageInbox (conversation list + chat interface), StartConversationButton (employer action)
  • Protected Route: Messages page accessible from both user type navigation menus

Key Features:

  • Employer-initiated conversations only (anti-spam protection)
  • Email notifications for offline recipients with "login to respond" CTAs
  • Real-time message polling (3-5 second intervals)
  • Read receipts and unread message badges
  • Bi-directional communication after employer initiates
  • Conversation history with message timestamps

Business Impact:

  • Reduces friction in employer-candidate communication
  • Keeps all recruitment conversations within platform (increased engagement)
  • Professionalizes candidate outreach process
  • Email notifications ensure timely responses even when users are offline

2. Dual-User Role Switching

Status: ✓ Fully Implemented & Debugged

Overview:

Users can now maintain both Job Seeker and Employer profiles simultaneously, with seamless switching between roles. This addresses the reality that many battery industry professionals wear multiple hats.

Technical Implementation:

  • Role Detection: System checks for both JobSeekerProfile entity AND Org membership
  • Onboarding Flow: "Become X Too" buttons in AccountSettings with force parameter
  • RoleSwitcher Component: Appears only when user has both profiles configured
  • Navigation Updates: Dynamic menu switching based on active role
  • Data Separation: Complete isolation between job seeker and employer data

User Journey:

  • Employer clicks "Become a Job Seeker Too" in Settings
  • Completes JobSeekerOnboarding flow with userType set to 'job_seeker'
  • RoleSwitcher button appears in navigation automatically
  • One-click switching between Employer Dashboard and Job Seeker Dashboard
  • Process works in reverse for job seekers becoming employers

Debugging & Fixes:

  • Issue: Onboarding redirects prevented form completion for existing users
  • Fix: Added ?force=true parameter to skip redirect checks
  • Issue: userType not being set after onboarding completion
  • Fix: Ensured both onboarding flows explicitly set userType field
  • Issue: RoleSwitcher appearing when user only had one profile
  • Fix: Improved detection logic to require both profiles before showing switcher

Business Impact:

  • Accommodates real-world use cases (recruiters exploring opportunities, hiring managers, consultants)
  • Increases platform stickiness (users don't need separate accounts)
  • Provides unique competitive advantage over rigid single-role platforms
  • Improves user understanding of both sides of the marketplace

🐛 Critical Bug Fixes & Debugging

Bug #1: Dual-User Role Switching Not Working

Symptom:

Clicking "Become X Too" button showed "Checking..." then immediately redirected to map without showing onboarding form. Role switcher never appeared.

Root Cause:

Onboarding pages checked if profile existed at load time. For users with existing profiles, it immediately redirected before rendering the form. Additionally, userType field wasn't being set after completion.

Solution:

  • Added ?force=true parameter to bypass redirect check
  • Modified onboarding pages to skip redirect when force=true
  • Ensured userType field is explicitly set after onboarding completion
  • Updated RoleSwitcher detection logic to verify both profiles exist

Testing:

Verified complete flow: Employer → Become Job Seeker → Complete Form → Role Switcher Appears → Switch Roles Successfully

Bug #2: Company List Creation Failing Silently

Symptom:

Dropdown menus hidden behind modal, "Create List" button stuck on "Creating..." with no error or success message. Lists not appearing after submission.

Root Cause:

  • UI Issue: SelectContent z-index lower than Dialog overlay (z-index conflict)
  • Data Issue: user_id field missing from create mutation payload, causing silent failure on backend

Solution:

  • Set DialogContent z-index to 10000
  • Set SelectContent z-index to 10001 (above dialog)
  • Added user_id to mutation payload using await base44.auth.me()
  • Improved error handling with try/catch and user-friendly error messages

Testing:

Verified dropdown appears correctly, list creation succeeds, user receives success toast, and list appears in dashboard immediately.

Bug #3: Mapt+ Promote Button Incorrect Link

Symptom:

"Promote Job" button linked directly to pricing page instead of showing promotion modal with checkout flow.

Root Cause:

Button onClick handler incorrectly navigating to pricing page rather than opening MaptPlusModal.

Solution:

Updated button to open MaptPlusModal → Stripe Checkout → RecruitMaptPlusSuccess page flow with proper job ID passing through metadata.

🔧 Technical Improvements

  • Component Separation: Created focused, reusable components (StartConversationButton, MessageInbox, SavedCompaniesManager) instead of monolithic page files
  • Error Handling: Improved error handling across all new features with user-friendly messages and logging
  • Code Consistency: Maintained glassmorphism design system across all new UI elements
  • Real-time Features: Implemented efficient polling mechanisms for messaging (avoiding expensive WebSocket infrastructure)
  • Data Validation: Added proper field validation on both frontend and backend
